in the 1830 there were about 2 mil slaves working in the southern USA. by 1860, this numbers had increased to nearly four mil. some where treated well, but most were poorly fed and clothed and almost all were overworked. in the early 1800, abolitionists began their campaign to end. by 1860, most southerners were prepared to fight for their right to keep slaves. the underground railroad began towards the end of the 18th century, but it was not known as the underground railroad until about 1831
